Credit Unions Go On the Offensive with "What's In It For Me" Campaign
New campaign for area credit unions takes banks head-on
Laurel, MD—August 10, 2010—According to the Credit Union National Association, credit unions save their members hundreds of dollars each year. The average benefit per member is $104 per year, or $198 per household. In these difficult financial times, few banks can claim the same savings for their customers.
Launched in June, the “What’s In It For Me” campaign brings these facts and the many additional benefits of credit unions to light. With messages like “Find out what banks don’t want you to know at WhatsInItForMe.org,” the three-month campaign takes a hard-hitting approach to inform consumers about how credit unions differ from banks.
“The campaign takes banks head-on,” says Paul Rosenberger, Chief Services Officer of the Maryland & DC Credit Union Association (MDDCCUA). “There’s a market opportunity right now for credit unions due to the economic recession. Sentiment against banks is strong, and credit unions are looking to expand their memberships. We wanted to make a bold statement that tells consumers they have options for their banking needs.”
Sponsored by MDDCCUA and the Virginia Credit Union League (VACUL), conceived by LMD, a Laurel, MD-based marketing agency, and launched by Target Media, a media planning firm out of Harrisburg, PA, the campaign increases awareness of credit unions through radio, transit, and online advertising, as well as a website and social media presence. So far, more than 5,000 people have searched for a credit union using the credit union finder on WhatsInItForMe.org.
“Consumers may not know what a credit union is, or that credit unions offer several advantages over banks, including lower or no fees and better loan rates,” continued Rosenberger. “Ultimately, the campaign educates and informs consumers on the many benefits credit unions offer.”
